Basement Waterproofing: Say Goodbye to Moisture Problems & Mold

Oct 18, 2023

As a homeowner, there is nothing worse than water leaking into your basement. Water is destructive if it gets into your home, and can be hazardous to health if not treated. Wet basements can lead to foundational and structural problems, for one thing. But mold is a lingering problem in and of itself that needs to be addressed immediately.

The best way to handle these problems is to waterproof your basement. And this means several things. Waterproofing your basement walls as well as waterproofing your basement floors is key. But don’t forget the need to waterproof basement windows as well.

While it might seem like a lot, it doesn’t have to be. And depending on your moisture problem, your walls might take precedence over your windows, for example. But one thing is clear—The only way to beat water is to prevent it from getting in at all.

And fortunately, that’s where we come in. Let’s discuss some of the options you have when it comes to waterproofing your basement.

Talk to A Waterproofing Contractor

There is no reason to mess around with water. The damage it can cause can lead to further problems. And since we are  discussing your foundation, there is little room for letting damage get out of control.

A contractor should come and take a look at the problem to provide a fair assessment. While you can explain what you are experiencing over the phone, experienced eyes are preferred. A contractor can then provide a couple things:

  • What, precisely, the problem is.
  • What are your options for repair.
  • What will basement waterproofing cost.

Since each home is unique, each solution is tailored to the problem at hand. However, there are common solutions that tend to be utilized on a more common basis. These include crack repairs and drainage solutions.

Common Solutions

Many people ask if bzsements can be sealed from the inside. This is a valid question, as they would prefer not to dug up the entire exterior around the house. The answer is yes, cracks can be sealed from inside the basement.

This process is done with polyurethane crack injections. When there are wall or slab cracks, this is the preferred solution. It is non invasive in that it does not require disruption to the exterior foundation. Additionally, it can be done quickly.

If this is not the problem, then water drainage solutions might have to be addressed. This is done in a couple of ways, usually with a sump pump installation.
Crawl space encapsulation is another common remedy for drainage problems.

The bottom line is that you have options when it comes to preventing water from getting in. And whichever option you choose will also mean no more mold or lingering moisture. For these reasons, it’s crucial to turn to the experts and have the job done right.
