HOME HEALTH AND SAFETY

Kansas City homeowners are always finding ways to keep their home safe and healthy. One option that PierMagic offers is spray foam insulation. This can be used in a variety of applications, including metal building insulation, barndominium insulation,  and crawl space encapsulation.

Before we continue, a huge part of spray foam is R-value.

What’s an R-Value, and why is that important to consider?

The R-value is an important number to know when looking at insulation options, because it measures the effectiveness of the insulation. Companies like PolyMagic offer the spray foam insulation, which is has over 2x more R-value than traditional insulants. The R-value is calculated based on how well the insulation works in a given situation. The higher the R-value, the more effective the insulation. Traditional insulants typically have an R-value of 19. Spray foam insulation by PolyMagic has an R-value of 7.5 per inch. So, if you had 2 inches of spray foam within an area, you will have a 15 R-value, and so on.

OPEN CELL FOAM and CLOSED CELL FOAM

You may have heard of a few spray foam terms, including closed cell and open cell foam. What's the difference?

OPEN CELL FOAM

Open-cell foam has a lower R-value per inch than closed-cell, and is typically less expensive. However, the less expensive option means the open-cell must be applied in a thicker layer. This is ideal for areas that offer more space, including ceilings, floor joists, and attics.

CLOSED CELL FOAM

Closed-cell foam has a much higher R-value per inch, but is more expensive. The investment justifies the higher R-value. Once cured, the substance will be very tough, which can also provide increased structural integrity to walls and ceilings.
